What is Soul Fool Comedy?

It’s what I do on stage. It’s what I teach in my classes. It’s ultimately who I want to be.

It’s absurd theatrical comedy. Bizarre comedic circus. Vaudeville. Physical comedy like Lucille Ball, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Kristin Wiig & Kate McKinnon. I follow in the traditions of “clown”. (Insert gasp here.) No, not the CLOWN with ghastly makeup and oversized shoes. That’s a style born in a time of kerosene lamps then twisted and stereotyped for Hollywood movies. The new clown (the soul fool) is a comedian who exists somewhere between a playful child and sketch. It’s breathing poetry and the thing that you can’t put into words. The clown on stage acknowledges the audience. The fourth wall is a toy as much as the construct of society. The clown breaks rules in order to topple tyrants and blast through bullshit. The clown is the child who sees the emperor is not wearing new clothes, but is naked! The clown plays with reality, to make it lighter, and maybe to break it a littler bit.

I found the words “Soul Fool” to capture the essence of my comedy. Sadly, the word clown has become a loaded and confusing word. Soul Fool is the Clown. Laughing at the human experience, playing with failure, beauty, innocence, charm, guilt, pleasure and desire.

Clown Lab

Tuesdays, 7-9:30, Feb 6. – Mar 26

@ NewNow, 2100 West St. Oakland

Taught in association with All Out Comedy

Think Kristin Wiig, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jim Carey, Lucille Ball, Rowan Atkinson. They make us laugh with a gesture, a movement, a surprising use of their face or body. Discover your physical comedian and feel comfortable using your body on stage – and in life!

The class starts with games to unlock our physical comedians, has a discussion midway about the psychology of comedy, creativity and connection, and finishes with low pressure, creative stage time in a supportive environment.

Great for humans with an interest in comedy, improv, teaching, facilitating, hosting or otherwise being a more embodied human!

what is this

A real website…

I’ve lived a life of self employment, creating shows, companies, festivals, and communities. Everything starts as an idea, and then we work at it really hard… and somewhere down the line it becomes “real” in the eyes of the public. It’s hard to say where that line is. Does it become real when you get a website? Or when you have a certain amount of followers? Or is it when you make a room full of people roil with laughter? Everything is a construct, and my project, or your project, is only as real as we continue to make it, every single day. I would like to make things with you.

It’s hard to be an artist and also make a website. But I’m putting this up as a reminder that life is a work in progress. That we learn more through sharing. It’s not perfect, and neither are you and neither is Taylor Swift. I promise. Don’t let PERFECT be the enemy of good. Love ya kid.
